It’s all in the plans

So I get this email, Cc’ing me a reminder that I look at these ‘drawings’, the architectural plans, in fact, for this old doctors residence. They need a quote. I can help, for sure. Irish builders, what can you do.

The Plans

I assume they just need a plumbing quote, and for some reason forwarded a Cc of the request to me. No, they didn’t really ask me, but,  I got this.

You might want to take a look at the PDF attached plans. They’re not the Death Star plans, they’re much easier to analyze, but you’ll want to do some zooming unless you have the eyesight of a young Eagle. I’ve even highlighted a couple of key areas.

JJ,

Thanks for the reminder, you don't mind if I call you JJ, do you? Let me just say, I love it! I would definitely quote to build this, if I was:

a) In Ireland
b) Was a builder, like the other John on the email
c) The correct John Silver that you were trying to reach

Couple of thoughts on the plans before we go on or I commit to anything, though. I think the kitchen area might benefit from a little more storage, rather just a sink and one measly cupboard. These staff probably will want snacks and such, where will they keep them? Thoughts?

With regards to the disabled accessible bathroom - is the turning circle really big enough? I like to really be able to spin when I'm turning, and Scotsmen and Princesses really like to be able to get their kilts / dresses up in big circle when they twirl, so should you consider extra space here? I also don't know that we should install a permanent person in a wheelchair in that washrooms, it could be uncomfortable for other patrons of the facilities - wait, would this be a real person or a model of one in a chair? I need clarification as I'm not fully qualified when it comes to reading architectural drawings, but I've never seen a person in a plan before. Actually, from this perspective you may want to run all this stuff by Bill M****** before making big decisions, as I'm guessing he's way more qualified of an architect than I am, even if he does draw little people on his plans.

In terms of the roof: Do we really want to lose the chimney? Can't we just patch it up? Chimneys are so nice on a roof line, I rarely build a lego or Minecraft house without one, honestly. Your call though, of course.

Finally, have you thought about having the top of the ramp open up into a lion pit or something if the intruder alarm goes off? I think one wailing alarm simply isn't enough to truly defend against intruders - you need more of a deterrent now-a-days.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone wondered where the Old Doctor has been moved to? Where's he living now his residence is being overhauled like this? Shouldn't we be nicer to Doctors? Especially old ones? Just something to think about there.

I hope this input has proven helpful, and I apologise I'm unable to furnish you with a quote. If the other John was the John you were asking for the quote, perhaps he will be able to help. I'm sure this John from **** [The Architecture Firm] (even though **** doesn't have a website) is a fine fellow and a wonderful builder (you're welcome, John!), and will also be able to accommodate my suggested input in his quote. Except for the lions, probably. If your builder can get lions, I'd honestly question what kind of builder he really is, but that's just me. Good luck with your project! I'm sure it will be lovely as I hear Cork is nice at this time of year. Cheers,

John 'Not a builder' Silver

PS: If you're looking for more ideas and input on the project, give me a shout! You have my email address.

That’s right, even email pirates can have a flair for design.
